I had to keep track of 40 engineers that work for our company. Each one is a specialist in areas of product development who were scheduled to meet with and work with other engineers in Singapore for two weeks. I was the liaison between the two sets of engineers, and had to arrange lodging, food, transportation and recreation for our people. The hotel to pick was easy. Food services in the hotel took care of meals. I hired transportation services in Singapore that contracts buses to move them back and forth from the hotel to their work facility. I thought it was going to be a nightmare to keep 40 engineers comfortable, fed, entertained and transported on time, but hiring professionals at the destination made all the difference.
Our company did a lot of extra tipping for the hotel staff that went out of their way to keep our people on schedule with work as well as fed and entertained during the off hours. The bus charter company in Singapore were really great. No one was ever late to work, and everyone got back to the hotel at the end of the work days. I did not get any bad reports or complaints. I would say that it really pays to hire professionals to do the job right. Some of the engineers I know personally, and they commented favorably about the hotel, the food, the transportation and other things that made up their two week trip to Singapore.
The professional bus drivers got our people to and from their destination every day safely. I admit that I was nervous until everyone was back home, but I didn’t need to be. Everyone over there who helped pull this off deserves a raise! Engineers can be some difficult people to contend with. The ones I know well have friendly personalities, but not all of them are like that. A couple of them are downright cranky, yet there were no complaints.
